Chris Kluwe, Gay Rights Activist

He’s also now a punter for the Oakland Raiders. I was kind of curious about Kluwe’s press conference today. He actually spoke more about football than politics. He said his focus was mostly on making the team. If I remember correctly, when a member of the Vikings, Kluwe  sent an obscenity-laced letter to a Maryland state delegate. This was in response to the lawmaker’s letter to Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Biscotti regarding another player’s stance on gay marriage.

Personally, I think Kluwe, despite being a foul-mouthed jerk, should be given a wide range of latitude here. After all, BSP doesn’t consider punters to be football players. Kluwe has plenty of time to worry about political bullshit. What is practice like for a punter? What does a punter do on the sidelines besides spin a ball and kick it into a net? The guy probably wrote that document on the sidelines while Adrian Peterson was running wild over an NFC North opponent. The Vikings must have been impressed with Kluwe’s political stances. They thought Kluwe was so awesome, they told him he could kick for someone else.

Kickers who get involved in non-football stuff are actually beneficial. If your place kicker or punter is worried about other weird shit like “One Million Moms”, they won’t be thinking too hard about the game and bang that game-losing field goal wide.

About bittersportspills

I love sports. I don't love the hype, homerism, ratings talk, self-important egomaniacs, bias or any of the other nonsense you get with the national media. Nor will you get the two clowns on sports talk radio who stage phony arguments. It doesn't make it entertaining. It makes it time to turn on your iPod and jam instead of listening to white noise generators. This is the sports blog for you, the ones who don't like everything Los Angeles or New York. Just because the sporting media is based there doesn't mean we have to like their teams. We do treat them fairly, though. That means if one of those cities has an average QB who plays particularly well...we'll note it. If they're garbage, we'll say so. Instead of crying "why, why, why" like a certain sports media homer did in his radio broadcast. This isn't my job...I have a real one. Nevertheless, I'll post here when I make an observation. Common sense in sports is nearly dead. Now we're attempting to bring it back.
