Speaking of the Raiders…

…any Raiders fans out there looking forward to facing the Saints tomorrow night in Oakland? Even if its just a preseason game?

Me neither.

The last time something like this happened, it was 1997. The Raiders were playing in preseason against the old Gunslinger himself, coming off a Super Bowl win. He permanently imprinted the name “Derrick Mayes” on my mind. RaidersFan believed the Raiders were capable of winning the Super Bowl. I had no such illusions.

My friend “Don” and I went to see the Raiders play the Chiefs in Game Two on a Monday Night. In a game the Raiders pretty much dominated, mistakes (as usual) doomed the team to defeat. Yep, that was the one where Andre Rison caught the bomb with less than a minute left to win it for KC. I will say this, it is awesome watching a big NFL play develop coming towards you. It’s also absolutely horrible when its a season-crushing play. After the game, the Raiders wept, and refused to let reporters into the locker room. A real bad sign. You have to have more character than that if you want to win in the NFL. Of course, the Raiders finished 4-12 and fired the coach, Joe Bugel. The best thing that came out of that season was the hiring of Head Coach Jon Gruden. Interestingly enough, the other coach interviewed by the Al was Bill Belichick. He wanted too much money. I always wondered what would have happened if Belichick had become Raiders coach. Or if Sean Payton had ignored Jerry Jones and accepted the job. The Al is interesting because he does look at very good head coaches. Gruden, Belichick and Payton all won Super Bowls. So did Mike Shanahan. The Raiders haven’t won a Super Bowl in 28 years. For some reason, the Raiders just haven’t gotten over the hump with those people coaching…or close to coaching.

About bittersportspills

I love sports. I don't love the hype, homerism, ratings talk, self-important egomaniacs, bias or any of the other nonsense you get with the national media. Nor will you get the two clowns on sports talk radio who stage phony arguments. It doesn't make it entertaining. It makes it time to turn on your iPod and jam instead of listening to white noise generators. This is the sports blog for you, the ones who don't like everything Los Angeles or New York. Just because the sporting media is based there doesn't mean we have to like their teams. We do treat them fairly, though. That means if one of those cities has an average QB who plays particularly well...we'll note it. If they're garbage, we'll say so. Instead of crying "why, why, why" like a certain sports media homer did in his radio broadcast. This isn't my job...I have a real one. Nevertheless, I'll post here when I make an observation. Common sense in sports is nearly dead. Now we're attempting to bring it back.
