Saints suspensions

Saints suspensions were dealt out today. Today, linebacker Jonathan Vilma was suspended for a full season by the NFL, costing him $3.3M. The NFL also suspended three other players. Defensive end Will Smith is suspended for the first four games. Former Saints defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove, now with the Green Bay Packers, is suspended for the first eight games of the 2012 season. Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita, is suspended for three games.

Vilma bears the brunt of the suspensions. Smith, Hargrove and Fujita can participate in offseason programs and preseason games. Vilma’s suspension begins immediately.

The interesting thing from Vilma’s standpoint is, he wasn’t even informed of the suspension by the NFL, the NFLPA, or the Saints. He found out while watching SportsCenter. That’s weak, but typical of Roger Goodell’s NFL. I find it interesting how Goodell is portrayed as this paragon of virtue. It’s so fake it makes me ill. Goodell doesn’t want these lawsuits by former players, coming back to grab a piece of the pie, and he’s trying to slide towards flag football.

You know what I’m sick of? I’m sick of the NFL pretending that we don’t like devastating, pulverizing hits. We saw the “you got JACKED UP” series on BSPN on Sunday mornings. We loved the “NFL’s Greatest Hits” videos.

Do you want to eliminate the destruction of big hits? Turn the league back into a running league again. What happens when you see big pass plays? You see guys get running starts against wide receivers. You see new and innovative blitzes to get to the quarterback. You need to stop the Playstation football, and deliberalize the passing game. If Ray Lewis has five yards to run to hit you, he can’t destroy you with the same energy he could if he has the twenty-yard running start he gets when he’s destroying a tight end. End holding and make the passing game difficult again.

I’m also sick of old time players saying the league didn’t give a sh!+ about its players. It’s true, but that doesn’t mean the league is wrong.

Look, BSP has always been a big proponent of old time players. However this has gone way too far. Old time players are trying to get money earned by today’s players. They missed out on it, but unfortunately, that’s the way it goes.

I do think the players from that era should get their medical bills taken care of by a joint NFL-NFLPA fund. A guy like Dave Duerson kills himself with a shot to the chest so the devastation to his brain can be studied by scientists. Same with Andre “Muddy” Waters.  We don’t even know about Junior Seau, whom we will discuss in our next post. One thing’s for sure. The money, the prestige today’s players are getting may not be able to compensate for the pain post-football life is causing.

I also want to know who the rat H-o-Fer in the Saints locker room is. I want to see that guy get totally destroyed this season. Like we say, there’s nothing worse than a rat. A guy who would snitch on his own team after getting a ring…come ON!

About bittersportspills

I love sports. I don't love the hype, homerism, ratings talk, self-important egomaniacs, bias or any of the other nonsense you get with the national media. Nor will you get the two clowns on sports talk radio who stage phony arguments. It doesn't make it entertaining. It makes it time to turn on your iPod and jam instead of listening to white noise generators. This is the sports blog for you, the ones who don't like everything Los Angeles or New York. Just because the sporting media is based there doesn't mean we have to like their teams. We do treat them fairly, though. That means if one of those cities has an average QB who plays particularly well...we'll note it. If they're garbage, we'll say so. Instead of crying "why, why, why" like a certain sports media homer did in his radio broadcast. This isn't my job...I have a real one. Nevertheless, I'll post here when I make an observation. Common sense in sports is nearly dead. Now we're attempting to bring it back.
