Serena Williams, Jimmy Connors and Idiots

Yesterday, ESPN published a Facebook post on Serena Williams thoroughly dominating Maria Sharapova in the Olympics women’s singles finals. They asked if we were happy for her. Obviously the Williams sisters are a lightning rod that BSPN uses on occasion. I will say I watched that match and Serena deserved a post.

Serena Williams is one of the few professional athletes who really gets the Olympics. She was ready, came out with her “A” game and dominated. Even more so, she complimented other athletes who were engaged in their own events.

Unfortunately, some of our fellow citizens revealed something about themselves in the comments. One person wrote about Serena throwing temper tantrums while the “greats” like … Jimmy Connors … Behaved with class.

Are you serious? Are you trying to make up points? Did you ever see Jimmy Connors play? At least the guy didn’t roll off with John McEnroe as a fine example.

Now we don’t go to racism very often in this blog, because that’s an area more likely used by Euro soccer fan. However, I’m thinking either the person is a complete idiot, a liar or a racist. Jimmy Connors outbursts were legendary. The one thing I find interesting about Connors is, the comments regarding his behavior are gushing with crap like “what a competitor.”

Let’s lean to the complete idiot theory. Then again, most racists are complete idiots.

I love sports. I don't love the hype, homerism, ratings talk, self-important egomaniacs, bias or any of the other nonsense you get with the national media. Nor will you get the two clowns on sports talk radio who stage phony arguments. It doesn't make it entertaining. It makes it time to turn on your iPod and jam instead of listening to white noise generators. This is the sports blog for you, the ones who don't like everything Los Angeles or New York. Just because the sporting media is based there doesn't mean we have to like their teams. We do treat them fairly, though. That means if one of those cities has an average QB who plays particularly well...we'll note it. If they're garbage, we'll say so. Instead of crying "why, why, why" like a certain sports media homer did in his radio broadcast. This isn't my job...I have a real one. Nevertheless, I'll post here when I make an observation. Common sense in sports is nearly dead. Now we're attempting to bring it back.

“However, I’m thinking either the person is a complete idiot, a liar or a racist.”

But let’s postulate that you’re simply NOT thinking…anyone who has to invoke the I or R words to make a point is simply shooting from the hip.

You’ve chosen an almost indefensible topic on which to heap venom. Serena and Venus Williams represent the worst in sportsmanship. They take any opportunity for self-aggrandizement that they can and blame people and situations for any deficiency or loss. They’ve even used their poor dead sister as an excuse for not playing well. Most people are sick and tired of their boorish behavior – Serena’s comment about the flag hugging her is typical.

The sisters are great tennis players, but I have no respect for them. I wish them well, but I’ll be happy when they retire. Like John McEnroe, they’ve done their part to bring the sport down to a base level that removes the wonder, joy, and inspiration that gives so many people pleasure

It really doesn’t take any game to throw the I and R words around. If you wish to distinguish yourself from others, you might consider letting the fever in your brain die down before you start typing. Then, you’ll have something to say. Good luck!

    • I am reading this statement in August of 2013 and I find it one of the most judgmental, I’ll informed and prejudicial statements, I have ever read made about any of the world’s most famous athletes period. The Williams sisters in my opinion have probably been two of the most honest athletes in stating exactly what they thought about a particular match in which they participated or whatever. This is what made them so refreshing and different, you knew the truth and not some diplomatic gobble-de-gook.History will also show that Serena Williams was generally right when she concluded as she did very often that matches were very often lost by her-through over-hitting or otherwise-than her opponent being a better tennis player than her. I do firmly believe that if Serena had put her mind firmly to the task and played with the consisten devotion that a Navratilova or Graf did she probably would have broken just about every Grand Slam record at this time.

  4. I think the Williams sisters are hot. That’s all that matters to me. By the way, I don’t watch tennis unless extremely hot chicks are playing.
