Changing of the NFL Guard

Did you see the New England – Carolina game?

The way how it ended made me think, we are seeing something truly significant here. There’s a changing of the NFL guard.

Granted, its only a suspicion New England got an edge from the officials. Then again, they had one of the most infamous calls in the history of the NFL, the Tuck Rule, which moved them to the front of the NFL, to true contender for a lengthy period of time.

The non-call on Rob Gronkowski getting held in the end zone at the end of the Carolina game, to me was significant. New England gets that call. They get the benefit of the doubt almost all the time. Picking up that flag and making Carolina the winner, to me signifies the NFL is willing to prop up its championship caliber teams. That’s the NFL walking away from the Patriots.

Carolina, on the other hand defeated the defending NFC champion, followed by the AFC runner-up, in back-to-back games. Carolina did it by playing hard and physical in both games. That team is led by Cam Newton, and he’s not shrinking from the task. I’ve long had questions and suspicions of Cam Newton but that guy can play. He’s a top notch quarterback, the true prototype of the big running QB who can get the ball downfield with accuracy. Even more importantly, they can get stops. As great a job as John Fox did in getting Carolina to a Super Bowl, Cam Newton sets the Panthers up for long-term success.

About bittersportspills

I love sports. I don't love the hype, homerism, ratings talk, self-important egomaniacs, bias or any of the other nonsense you get with the national media. Nor will you get the two clowns on sports talk radio who stage phony arguments. It doesn't make it entertaining. It makes it time to turn on your iPod and jam instead of listening to white noise generators. This is the sports blog for you, the ones who don't like everything Los Angeles or New York. Just because the sporting media is based there doesn't mean we have to like their teams. We do treat them fairly, though. That means if one of those cities has an average QB who plays particularly well...we'll note it. If they're garbage, we'll say so. Instead of crying "why, why, why" like a certain sports media homer did in his radio broadcast. This isn't my job...I have a real one. Nevertheless, I'll post here when I make an observation. Common sense in sports is nearly dead. Now we're attempting to bring it back.
