Did you see where DeSean Jackson got cut by Philadelphia, and the Washington Redskins signed him for a pretty decent contract (3yrs, $24M, $16M guaranteed)?
Before we get into the speculation behind his departure from Philadelphia, let’s just look at what Washington gets: A Pro Bowl caliber receiver, for $2.5M less per season than he would have been paid in Philadelphia. 83 catches, 1332 yards, 9TD’s receiving in 2013. Anyone who says this doesn’t hurt Philadelphia on the field is kidding themselves. Washington acquired a dynamic playmaker without giving up tangible assets in return. If he can stay out of trouble … and there’s no indication he’s ever been in significant trouble … he will end up having a huge year alongside Pierre Garcon.
Now to the dreadful part: DeSean Jackson was cut by the Eagles and we don’t know why. Some say he had a terrible attitude. Others said he was a gang member, or at least closely associated with gang members.
BSP says the gang talk was total BS, and we shouldn’t have been told it, much less believed it. The Eagles, namely coach Chip Kelly, didn’t want Jackson any more. Period. Personally, I found the gang story disgusting, and an indicator of the Eagles front office’s willingness to stoop to any means to discredit a player they simply don’t want. Dump the guy, but don’t destroy him.
