Today, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver fired Donald Sterling as an NBA owner.
BSP says Sterling is in great position to retain ownership of the team IF he chooses to do so. In fact, his position is even better than it was before the comments became public. If I were Sterling, which I am not, I’d demand a billion dollars minimum from the league to take the team. Maybe $1.5B. Sterling only leaves if he consents to it.
First, there’s such a thing as freedom of speech. Last I remember, this is America and there’s a Bill of Rights and unless it causes a threat to public safety, you can say what you want. Second, the tape is an egregious violation of privacy rights. Sterling certainly didn’t consent to have that conversation taped nor published. Third, the league has forced Sterling into the position where he loses fair market value.
TMZ says tonight Sterling’s former girlfriend is going to publish a sex tape within the next three days. How classy. I don’t think Sterling’s involved in it, thank goodness.
Now the NBA can get back to business as usual — fixing games for ratings sake.
