Cleveland’s Good News and Bad News

Did you see the NFL Draft last night? If you’re a Cleveland Browns fan, it was an interesting night. They trade down, pick up a #1 next year from a bad team; move around to get the players they want.

The good news is, the Browns aren’t that far off from being very good. They have a lot of top end talent. They selected Justin Gilbert, the best cornerback in the draft at #8. Not bad anyway, but after some maneuvering, they ended up picking Johnny Manziel at #22. It’s easy to see Cleveland was lacking a QB over the last couple of years; note their improvement with Brian Hoyer in the lineup.

By the way, the Texans just selected a guard at #33, Xavier Su’a-Filo. And the Cowboys just traded with Washington? Why does that happen? Dallas gives Washington a 2nd and 3rd? Crazy talk. It says the Cowboys haven’t made the playoffs since 2009. They won’t after giving up these picks.

The bad news is, Josh Gordon looks like he’s going away for a full season. Brian Hoyer looked pretty solid as the Browns QB, and that team might have to endure a controversy. Normally, that’s a good thing except what happens if Hoyer is BETTER than Manziel? Does Manziel play no matter what? Manziel has the giant douchebag effect, but no one knows if he can play at this level. Manziel has a lot more to prove; he seems to be working harder at marketing himself than his football abilities. While Manziel is popular, that means little in the NFL. Colin Kaepernick is a better athlete than Manziel and he’s catching a lot of heat from the niners fan base and casual fans. We didn’t even mention the Browns owner is a total ‘bag. What kind of douche fires a coach after a year; a coach that loses his starting QB?

The Browns have to produce wins, and now. No kidding. And the Steelers, Ravens and Bengals are definitely not going to make it easy on you.

About bittersportspills

I love sports. I don't love the hype, homerism, ratings talk, self-important egomaniacs, bias or any of the other nonsense you get with the national media. Nor will you get the two clowns on sports talk radio who stage phony arguments. It doesn't make it entertaining. It makes it time to turn on your iPod and jam instead of listening to white noise generators. This is the sports blog for you, the ones who don't like everything Los Angeles or New York. Just because the sporting media is based there doesn't mean we have to like their teams. We do treat them fairly, though. That means if one of those cities has an average QB who plays particularly well...we'll note it. If they're garbage, we'll say so. Instead of crying "why, why, why" like a certain sports media homer did in his radio broadcast. This isn't my job...I have a real one. Nevertheless, I'll post here when I make an observation. Common sense in sports is nearly dead. Now we're attempting to bring it back.
