As you know, Josh Gordon was already going to get suspended for the season for a failed drug test. There’s a hearing scheduled later this month to make that determination, but while awaiting the hearing, Gordon was arrested for DUI this past weekend. Gordon allegedly blew a .09, just above the legal limit of .08.
While that’s minor … alcohol affects many people in different ways … Gordon clearly needed to avoid the spotlight, otherwise he was going to get suspended without pay. He didn’t and he’s going to pay a huge price for having done so.
It IS about Gordon’s life, and props to Jackson for recognizing it. In the meantime, I’m concerned about two groups: The people dumping all over him, and the people stating these are minor transgressions. The people dumping all over him are the holier than thou, this is the worst thing ever until it happens to me group. They want all athletes to be the kind of guy who played in the 1950’s, when football / everything else in America was romanticized as The Ultimate. They don’t like football players, except Peyton Manning. Then there’s the other kind … who happen to be mostly Cleveland Browns fans … wanting to minimize the crimes Gordon is committing. Yes, DUI is a crime. Yes, marijuana use, except in Washington state and Colorado, is a crime. Cleveland Browns fan is an enabler of his behavior and the thought that this is not a big deal is in itself a big deal. You can see it with Manziel. Browns fan loves his sports, and won’t go against finally getting into that Super Bowl. I admire their persistence, but they care less about these guys being good human beings than they do about that Super Bowl goal.
