Did you see? Michael Sam got signed! And that other thing …

Yet another Michael Sam update, with a BSP twist.

As you know, the Dallas Cowboys signed Michael Sam to their practice squad. This makes him the first openly gay player on their roster. It’s been viewed positively by most of their fans I’ve spoken with. They say they don’t care as long as he can play. I’m good with that, except I’m now thinking some of the shortcomings we noted with his play were overblown.

BSP, however, wants to let you know the news overshadowed Josh Brent getting suspended for the first 10 games of the season. Brent, as you know, ended up killing his teammate Jerry Brown while driving drunk. What’s super weird about the NFL is the fact that there are people “supporting” this guy, this drunk driver. This guy had gotten a DWI prior to the killing one. In the incident, he was drunk, and Brown was NOT. So why was Brent driving and Brown not?

You’ve known Mr. Drunk Driver. He INSISTS he’s good, even though you question it. Mr. Drunk Driver says he’ll drive YOU home. Mr. Drunk Driver says this is his mother f**king car, he’s not leaving it, and you’re not driving it either.

What else irks me is Brown’s mother, Stacey Jackson says:

“My beautiful son is in heaven now, and Josh has to be given a chance to live his life and do something for someone else. We all make mistakes, and we all have an entrance date and an exit day. Although I miss Jerry every day, I know he would be very happy that Josh has another chance to play football.”

Are you out of your mind? Either you are getting paid big time, or you are koo-koo for cocoa puffs crazy.

You told me how Ray Rice deserved a longer suspension. You said he should have gotten six to eight games. The worst commissioner in sports, Roger Goodell says he was WRONG. Said he should have done more. Said it won’t happen again. Said if it happens twice, lifetime BAN for the NFL-related personnel.

Meanwhile, this guy kills someone and gets 10 games? Josh Gordon, and let’s not excuse him, got 16 games for getting high. Jerry Brown is dead and that rates 10? Are you kidding me? Reeks of the Leonard Little nonsense, when he was a valued piece of the St. Louis Rams, he was allowed to practice while serving a sentence for killing a woman, a mother with his Navigator. He was so, so sorry at the time. For at least a while:

Leonard was picked up for driving drunk again though he was eventually acquitted despite failing three field sobriety tests and refusing a breathalyzer test. This, after killing someone. After being suicidal with grief. After 90 days in jail. And after getting a whole new shot at life.

I guess John Wilkes Booth would have gotten a 10 gamer from Goodell; giving his broken leg time to heal and rehab before coming back in time to help his team out down the stretch.

So enjoy your good news about Sam, and wait for Josh Brent to come back.

About bittersportspills

I love sports. I don't love the hype, homerism, ratings talk, self-important egomaniacs, bias or any of the other nonsense you get with the national media. Nor will you get the two clowns on sports talk radio who stage phony arguments. It doesn't make it entertaining. It makes it time to turn on your iPod and jam instead of listening to white noise generators. This is the sports blog for you, the ones who don't like everything Los Angeles or New York. Just because the sporting media is based there doesn't mean we have to like their teams. We do treat them fairly, though. That means if one of those cities has an average QB who plays particularly well...we'll note it. If they're garbage, we'll say so. Instead of crying "why, why, why" like a certain sports media homer did in his radio broadcast. This isn't my job...I have a real one. Nevertheless, I'll post here when I make an observation. Common sense in sports is nearly dead. Now we're attempting to bring it back.
