Clay Matthews takes a Kill Shot

Did you see Clay Matthews put a kill shot on Russell Wilson in yesterday’s game? Did you see Russell Wilson go absolutely to garbage afterwards?

At halftime, Jimmy Johnson correctly noted Wilson didn’t even bother to read the defense after that play. He couldn’t. The broadcasters … you know, Troy Aikman and Joe Buck … ignored Wilson had what is commonly known as a concussion. Dude was out on his feet, operating on motor memory. He did recover in time to lead that team to a win. One of the great team wins in recent football history. I’m sure the lights are very bright for Wilson this morning. He suffered a bigger injury than Richard Sherman did, for sure.

What I’m fascinated by is the lack of reaction to the kill shot. No doubt Matthews was trying to erase Wilson from human history with that play. Clearly Matthews was gunning. He knew who that player was. He was trying to end the game. There was almost no discussion of the effect of the hit until halftime. I like Clay Matthews and I say that. There’s no reason for that play, and he got flagged for it. If Wilson doesn’t get up and continue playing, Seattle is done. If Wilson is concussed, he has to get an evaluation. He might be done for the day anyway. Even if Tavaris Jackson pulls off a bigger miracle than Wilson, they might have to go to the Super Bowl without Wilson, the unquestioned leader of that team.

And that my friends, is why players play on though head injuries. Especially key players. Somebody needs to protect these guys from themselves. Then again, do we really want that?

Every dime these guys make, they earn.

About bittersportspills

I love sports. I don't love the hype, homerism, ratings talk, self-important egomaniacs, bias or any of the other nonsense you get with the national media. Nor will you get the two clowns on sports talk radio who stage phony arguments. It doesn't make it entertaining. It makes it time to turn on your iPod and jam instead of listening to white noise generators. This is the sports blog for you, the ones who don't like everything Los Angeles or New York. Just because the sporting media is based there doesn't mean we have to like their teams. We do treat them fairly, though. That means if one of those cities has an average QB who plays particularly well...we'll note it. If they're garbage, we'll say so. Instead of crying "why, why, why" like a certain sports media homer did in his radio broadcast. This isn't my job...I have a real one. Nevertheless, I'll post here when I make an observation. Common sense in sports is nearly dead. Now we're attempting to bring it back.
