Darnell Dockett wrote a column for Sports Illustrated. In “Behind the Face Mask“, he explains how most sports media and fans have been duped by the NFL’s focus on deflated footballs and JetsMedia buying into it. The reason for it is simple: non-guaranteed contracts. For those of you who don’t understand, not even guaranteed money is guaranteed in the NFL. Meanwhile, sports like baseball and basketball have guaranteed contracts, whether the players perform or not.
The fun thing was reading “fan comments.” Fans, especially those in sports media, are pretty stupid, so they start railing with nonsense like “you make all that money.” No they don’t. That’s crap for public consumption. Former NFL players can’t even afford Obamacare ; the premiums are too high. Meanwhile, Commissioner Goodell looks even worse than he already did with his absurd State of the League address / Q&A on Friday.
The only thing that’s going to help is a system of long term care for injured players and some guaranteed, guaranteed money. That is, the NFL’s sordid system of injury buyouts, cutting guys before date x in their so-called guaranteed contracts and a health care system focused on returning players to duty.
