I work in a business where sometimes we get media exposure. I realized the only thing the media does is generate ratings. At my desk, I put on a whiteboard the drawing of a dollar bill and wrote the words:
Everything revolves around this
Everything else is secondary. Everything else is actually meaningless. I’m watching this train wreck, this disaster with NBC anchorman Brian Williams evolve. Apparently the guy lied about his helicopter getting hit with small-arms fire. Actually, the crew said they had not been hit by any fire. Now one pilot is saying they did get hit, while two others are saying they didn’t. Now the media is getting involved according to their political beliefs. Fox is taking shots at Williams, asking if he can be trusted. Other outlets … mostly leftist, suggest what Williams said isn’t so important.
I’m not feeling sorry for him, even though it doesn’t matter. BSP suggests the only reason it matters is because of the battle for dollars.
I’m going to tell you part of a story. The story is about a media outlet I had to deal with. I can’t tell you what the media outlet is, or what the story is about. The bottom line is, the media outlet lied to you, the public. Since you never learned my side of the story, you probably suspect the media outlet is accurate. The media outlet isn’t exactly above the board in how they deal with people. The media outlet wanted to develop a source within my organization. The individual refused, so the media outlet tried another tactic to make the person comply. The media outlet attempted to make the individual look bad, like they didn’t know what they were doing. Those of us who worked with the individual knew the media outlet was lying. Those of us who were working the project were understandably upset.
But I learned. Oh, did I learn. What the media does to you is a great, little known secret to those . The media coerces people to talk to them; if you don’t comply, they trash you until you do.
Except Fox News.
Fox News doesn’t even bother with the forced cooperation part. They have their experts lined up. “Former administration _____”. That side is bad, and our side is good. Period. That’s they way they work and I admire that. Fox News isn’t subtle. You get what you get and that’s the way it goes. By that’s the way it goes, you can be basically do anything and Fox News will go a certain way on you. Frankly, you can be an axe murderer, but if you’re a well-known conservative, Fox will just ignore you or pretend it never happened. It isn’t really a news channel, it’s a conservative action channel. Since it is that way, you don’t have to worry about it veering off message.
In the case of our media outlet, it kind of went away. Mostly because the individual who the media outlet targeted left our organization. The way the individual was treated never left my mind. I really think its interesting how people never get to see the media for whom they are. Mostly because it would take the media revealing what they do to coerce people to comply in the first place.
